    as stated this tends to be the menindee lakes which are highly regulated for this purpose.

    to supply water to broken hill, there's a series of dams, weirs and lakes. This supplies both domestic and agriculture users.

    however the population is growing and the lakes are drying

    not to mention the drought...

    alternatives are being sought

    Groundwater is also used to a lesser degree

    (as well as the surface water of  the basin there is a large groundwater basin)
