  1. Northern California gets it's water supply from the San Joaquin and Sacramento river valleys.  Reservoirs store the water from rivers and precipitation runoff.  Also, ground water and snow melt provide water sources.  Snow melt is accumulated into the water supply only during certain times of the year.

Southern California gets about half of it's water from two aqueducts - the Eastern Sierra Nevada and Owens Valley.  Both aqueducts begin in the central part of the state.  The remainder comes from ground water and bottled water.

  2. Northern California

Local reservoirs and streams and groundwater are the primary sources of supply for communities along the north coast and the upper Sacramento Valley. Redding also receives water from the Central Valley Project, which begins in the Sacramento River in Shasta County, while Oroville receives water from the State Water Project, which begins at Oroville Dam on the Feather River. - www.water-ed.org/watersources/region.asp...

Overall, Southern California gets it’s water from a variety of sources. Groundwater sources provide between 30 and 40 percent of supply, and the remainder is imported from the Owens Valley, the Colorado River, and the State Water Project. Where you live in Southern California determines where, exactly, your water comes from. - aquafornia.com/where-does-southern-calif...
