Married, mature, all-around good guy who enjoys life and people. Well read, well traveled; excellent social skills. Effective communicator; team player with a can-do attitude and leadership ability. Dependable, focused, willing and able. Much experience; quick study able to master new methods and technologies. But getting old and, alas, no degree. Army veteran. What can I do in the highest unemployment area in the country? Who needs good help? Where do I look?

  1. I don't know Detroit, but it sounds like you'd be an asset to the city itself.  I'm sure the govt needs some coordinators to run programs in a struggling city.  Homeless outreach, transportation, buildings, sanitation, parks...

  2. If you tell us what your previous job experience is that'd help alot. Go to www.monster.com and search. I was on there the other day just out of interest and there were a good amount of jobs. Don't let the news get too much in your head. There are ALOT of jobs out there, there just might be alot more competition for those jobs.

Without knowing what kind of background you have the only advice I can give you is to look into entry level sales opportunities. If you have "excellent social skills," and a can-do attituded. It might be the perfect fit. Sales has high turn-over because many people don't like the nature of the job. For you that can be an area where age, experience, and leadership abilities can work to your advantage. Ofter there's opportunites to move up alot more quickly than in other job categories.

You might want to look into things such as insurance sales as well or other areas of sales that require a degree. Those degrees can usually be obtained within a few weeks or months and are a great thing to add to your resume if you end up looking for another job.

I don't know too much about you, but most people don't have strong resumes. Go online and search for resume tips and do's and don'ts. Make sure you're doing the right stuff and in interviews talking about the right stuff. Always be specific and talk about things you actually did and stay away from things such as having a can-do attitude. Instead talk about or write about a time when everyone else checked out and you pushed forward to success. The reason is, now a days everyone says they are dependable and are optomistics but unless they can tell you specific times and events when they did it, it comes across as b.s. And ALWAYS have someone read over your resume, maybe a even a few people.

  4. Buy the Sunday paper there are plenty of jobs in the paper. Also have u considered working at the post offce. They have career and non career positon . Apply on line at www.usps.com

  5. You have been actively working with the folks at Michigan Works? If not, at least register via the link below.

The single most improtant thing you can do is network. Use all of your contacts, and their contacts, and their contacts contacts. Let everyone know you're looking for work. And please be very focused on exactly WHAT kind of a job you want. The worst interviews are the folks who say "anything" when you ask them what kind of work they're seeking. NOT a good answer. A recruiter, job developer, or contact can only help those who are focused on a specific job, company, or industry. Vague gets you nothing, and the competition is stiff in your market.
