  1. It was common practice everywhere for residents and businesses to throw their garbage into unlined dumps, gravel pits, wetlands, and waterways. However, nowadays, heightened awareness of the environment resulted in specially designed sanitary landfills to reduce potential impacts of garbage on human health and the environment. A sanitary landfill is lined with compacted clay and a multilayered composite liner system to prevent the garbage from contaminating the groundwater.

  2. Here in W.Washington, we send our garbage to an E. Oregon landfill.

  3. Goes to a garbage dump & they either burn it, crush it, or let it grow into huge piles....

...sometimes those piles turn into hills since they've been there so long...and then the city will build houses over it. Gross. But it happens! Happened in my hometown.

  4. Landfills are used to bury trash and I've seen some cities such as Dayton, Ohio have incinerators which burn the garbage at very high temperatures. I live in the country and we put our garbage in a compost pile which decays and we use it for fertilizer for our garden.
