For example, in my car there is just a plastic dasboard with no holes or spaces for it to come out of (on the passenger side). Does it just pop out of the plastic? Whats to stop the plastic hitting you?

  1. Questions like this are asked and answered all the time here.  There are specific items that are required replacement items when a deployment occurs or when an airbag light comes on...and there are some items that are "check only".  Check out this website for the EXACT answers to your questions including fault code charts. This site tells you exactly what needs to be replaced and how to access them (seat belts & all) on over 3500 cars.  It's a pay site, but it's little money well spent to get the correct answers and to see exactly what you're after...it uses pictures, not text, so you can see what you’re looking for.

  2. If you car has front airbags, they come out of the steering wheel and right above the glove box.

Yes, they just pop out of the plastic and years of engineering keeps the plastic from hitting you.

I would be more worried about the metal hitting you in an accident.

  3. Airbags deploy only when they might be needed to prevent serious injury.

Frontal driver and passenger airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal crashes equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 10-12 mph.

Some manufacturers use different inflation thresholds depending on whether people are using their safety belts.

Thresholds of 10-12 mph typically are used for unbelted occupants, but thresholds are higher — about 16 mph — for belted occupants because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds.
