  1. "True dolphins," members of the family Delphinidae, can be found in all of the world's oceans.  Some of them, like killer whales (orcinas orca), can be found in all of the world's oceans, but many other species have much more limited ranges, like Hawaii's spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostrus)

There are four species of river dolphins, each of whom is only found in one of the world's larger rivers, but each of these species is so different from each other and from true dolphins that each is in a separate family.

There is a whole family of beaked whales (Ziphidae) that are frequently confused with dolphins, but they are quite different in some important ways.  For example, the skull bones of beaked whales are symmetrical while the skull bones of true dolphins are very asymmetrical.  That might not sound like a very big difference, but it's huge.  The ziphidae also have very different kinds of teeth than dolphins.  The largest, and among most plentiful of the ziphidae is Baird's beaked whale (Berardius bairdii), which looks like a bottle nose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), except it has a bulging forehead and can be up to 42 feet long.

Members of the porpoise family (Phoecena) are also frequently taken for dolphins, but their teeth, dorsal fins, body shape and breathing patterns are very different from true dolphins. Dwarf and pygmy sperm whales (Kogia breviceps and K. sima) are also frequently mistaken for dolphins, but they are also a separate family from dolphins and from the giant sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus).

Dolphins don't have homes but they do tend to hang out in specific areas, like common dolphins (Delphinus delphus), or they follow their food the way pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) follow squid.  Dolphins don't need homes because they don't sleep and they don't have any stuff.  Actually they do sleep, but only half of their brain at a time sleeps while the other half remains awake enough to remember to breathe.
