Where does imitation leather come from/how is it made?

& is that type of leather that kinda feels like some fabric actually the imitation kind or is that just another texture of leather. (the only thing i know about leather is that there is a real kind & the imitation kind, & that leather (i assume only the real kind) comes from animal skins.)
