  1. If this is your ancestor from the 1920 census, his place of birth was Poland  (under other juridiction, but what we now know as Poland)

    Name:   Wladislaw Macz

    [Wladislaw Maez]

  2. www.familysearch.org has listings for it in Guatemala, Poland, Hungary,  Austria, Germany, and the US ( Illinois, and Ohio). Spelling variations include Mc Z (with another name. The one I noticed was MC Z BOYD), MAAS, MAASS, MAES,

MASSE , MASZ, MAASZ , MAESS, MASS, MAHS, MAS, & MAESSE.

The earliest date I saw with one of the variations was this:

Agnes Maes - International Genealogical Index

Gender: Female Birth: 1559 Koeln Stadt, Rheinland, Preussen .

Maas is Dutch and North German: from a short form of Thomas.

Masse is English: variant of Mace.; Dutch: from Middle Dutch "masse" ‘"clog"’; ‘"cudgel"’, perhaps a metonymic occupational name for someone who wielded a club.

  3. It's probably Czech.  Hence the similar lettering.  Could be Polish or Slovak, or possibly Hungarian.  Some place in that region.
