  1. All the Precambrian forests from millions of years ago that fell and the wood was buried for millions of more years under great pressure.

The wood degenerated into carbon.  Some of the carbon was crushed into diamonds, some into charcoal, and some into vast pools of oil.

  2. It depends on the kind of oil you are talking about.  Some resevoirs of oil came from ancient swamps where there was enough plant and animal life to decay and produce oil as a final product, much like the description of the sea of fish.  However, swamps are more likely because there aren't any currents and such to wash much away.  The decaying matter is trapped.  The water is stagnant and so saturated with the decaying matter, that it can't aid in any sort of dissolving in any way.  With seas there is more water than there is decaying matter.  You need the reverse to produce such things as coal and oil.  Wyoming is a great example of this.

Also, most seas that dry up become beds of salts or gypsum, and other related minerals that are left after evaporation.  Again, these are also found in Wyoming.

Other oils come from the fats of animals.

  4. I asked this question of an oil excecutive that has been involved in all aspects of oil production and has lived in an environment where this question was asked of scholars and chemists and scientists for many years. Here is what he told me:

Oil producing areas were once vast oceans filled with billions of tiny fish. Over the millions of years that these oceand existed these fish died and more were born. The number, as you can imagine was limitless. When these oiceans disappeared due to the formation and reformation of the continents the remains of these fish disintegrated and were reduced to their origin elements such as as carbon.  Thus oil was produced. The vile smell of natural oil from an oil well gives you some idea of the long time decay of these early creatures.

  5. oil comes from organic matter, carbon in it's base form...contrary to popular belief oil is continuously naturally manufactured from plankton settling and being buried at the bottom of the ocean floor!

  6. From carbon, living matter which died millions of years ago and has been buried and compressed.
