  1. I'm going to answer this backwards. Sherbet is the North American and western European pronunciation of Sorbet or Sorbetto.

The original name Sorbetto came from Italy, when conquerers from the Middle East brought with them Sarbat. Sarbat was originally an ice slush brought in from the mountains and flavoured with fruit juices.

I would recommend an episode of either "The secret life of..." or "Unwrapped." Both air on the Food Network, and one of the two has an episode detailing the history of ice cream, sherbets, etc...

  2. Sherbet is like ice cream but instead of being made of milk it's made with water...

  3. the origin is Arabic شَرَاب  (sharab) = drink and in the plural form شَرَابَات  (sharabat), hence to Turkey serbet from here to Europe, probably through Italian sherbet and also sorbet and syrup as well.

  4. sherbet

1603, zerbet, "drink made from diluted fruit juice and sugar," from Turk. serbet, from Pers. sharbat, from Arabic sharba(t) "a drink," from shariba "he drank." Related to syrup.
