  1. This what ancestry has to say:

    English: patronymic from Hick.(Hickson)

This surname has also been established in the Irish county of Kerry since the 17th century.

There are some immigrants in the census with the birthplace of England.

  2. According to Patrick Hanks and Flavia Hodges Dictionary of Surnames the name Hick is English and from the medieval given name Hicke, a pet form of Richard.

The substitution of H as the initial resulted from the inability of the English to cope with the velar Norman R, as in Hobb, Hodge and Hann.

Patronymics are Hickson, Hickeson, Hixon and particularly in Lancashire, Higson.

Richard was in use amongst the Normans

  3. I can't help you with an answer, but you may need to expand your research a little. Surnames and heraldry seldom remain spelled and pronounced in their original form. Higson could be from the same lineage as Higsdon, Higston, Hickson, or any number of other variations.
