  4. We don't really know exactly where SIV in African primates came from.  SIV is one of many retroviruses that infect primates including humans.  What is really interesting is that monkeys don't get sick from the infection the way humans do.

    Once the chimp gets SIV though, he/she transmits it sexually and transplacentally the same as human transmission.
