  1. The O'Higgins, a branch of the O'Neill, were one of the great hereditary families of Poets in Gaelic Ireland and moved into Sligo from the Midlands at the end of the 12th century where they established their seats at Dooghorne and Kilmacteige in the Parish of Achonry and at Ballynary on the shore of Lough Arrow. Between 1653-54 Cromwell confiscated land from Catholic landowners. By the end of 1654 the O'Higgins had disappeared from their ancestral lands in Achonry and Kilmacteige and by 1721 the Ballynary line had moved to Summerhill in Co.Meath where they remained until 1962.
