Where does the MTA dispose of their old trains?

they use them to make artifical reefs off the coast of NJ and some also went to the coast of NC.... they make new homes for sea life ...

if auction for scrap they have to give part of the money back to the federal government as they were purchased in part with fed money.

so go to museums. so go to the botton of the sea to make housing for fish.

some are kept for spare parts.

Most are scrapped, some have been turned into artificial reefs. Go to nycsubway.org. There are tons of pictures and info on scrapped subway cars and cars of the past.

The other two rail systems run by the MTA has been disposing of their older trains as well:  The Long Island Railroad and Metro North systems have recently finished disposing their long-serving Budd M-1 Metropolitan EMU cars, which were sold to scrappers in Mexico and Canada.  These were replaced by the new Bombardier M-7 EMUs now in service.

The Long Island Railroad also sold all of its old P72 coach fleet to the scrappers, though a couple survive on tourist lines in Colorado and a few as inspection cars on the New York & Atlantic.  LIRR's entire GP38-2 diesel locomotive fleet used to pull the P72s as well as its freight trains is now gone, sold back to EMD and rebuilt for leasing service, and a few are still with the New York & Atlantic (which took over freight service on the LIRR).

Metro-North had been scrapping some of the famous dual-mode FL9s in house, torn up for scrap at its Croton-Harmon yard.

The list of old MTA equipment disposals go on and on..  Too many to list.  I was sad to see that stuff go..  Those are the trains I grew up watching.
