    Joshua

Biblical name (meaning “God is salvation” in Hebrew) borne by the Israelite leader who took command of the children of Israel after the death of Moses and led them, after many battles, to take possession of the promised land. Other forms of his name include Hebrew Yehoshua(h), Yeshua, Hosea, Oshea, and Greek Iesos (Jesus). The name is very popular among Jews, and was also favoured by the Puritans and Nonconformists. Cognates: Dutch: Jozua. Italian: Giosuè.

  3. Scripture

It is a Hebrew name first recorded in the Bible regarding Joshua, who served Moses on the Exodus from Egyptian captivity. He came back with Caleb in scouting out the land God had prepared for Israel, and they were the only 2 of 12 who said, faithfully, the land was conquerable.  The other 10 feared taking on the giants inhabiting the land.

Joshua's famous quote:  "Choose ye this day whom you will serve.  As for me an my house, we shall serve the Lord"
