  1. Ancient Norse ancestry would indicate a warrior who had used an ax to kill an enemy leader as a mauler. So, if John killed a leader with an ax, he would become John Mauler. (Much like English uses of Wolfslayer) Trickling down to modern times, this name became Maul instead of Mauler, as battles and chivalry were less and less a part of culture.

  2. There are Mauls in the census from Sweden, Germany and Poland.  Are you looking for a particular Maul family?

  3. The meaning of the surname MAUL is - one with a deformed mouth or one who talk excessively.

  4. Maul

    Last name origins & meanings:

German: nickname for someone with a deformed mouth, or for someone who made excessive use of the mouth in eating, drinking, or talking, from Middle High German mūl ‘mouth’.

German: possibly a nickname from Middle High German mūl ‘mule’.

English: from Mall, a medieval pet form of the female personal name Mary
