    The birthday party. In ancient times, people believed that you could get a visit from ‘the evil spirits’ on your birthday. So, they threw big parties in hopes that the guests would provide a protective buffer and keep the spirits away. What’s with the candles on our birthday cake? Most folklore experts think this tradition was started by the ancient Greeks, who used to take cakes to the temple of the moon Goddess Artemis - they added candles so the cakes would glow like the moon. Since the gods were often asked for favors, this is probably why we make a wish before blowing out the candles.
