I am installing the Hampton Bay Redington IV 52" ceiling fan w/remote I am using the close to ceiling mounting, not the standard mounting with the Ball/downrod assembly. I repeat, I am not using the Ball/downrod assembly. I'm having a wiring issue. i have a green wire hanging from the mounting plate and no green wire coming from the ceiling fan. What am i to do with the green wire coming from the mounting plate?

  1. In a 2 wire setting, the metal box and conduit acts as a ground. So by using the plate, you are completing the ground circuit, and would attach the ground wire from the fan motor to this wire.

If you have the usual 3 wire setting it can be included in the ground wire (bare wire in a 3 wire set) coupling.

  2. The box you are wiring it to in the ceiling, by modern wiring standards, should have 3 wires coming to it unless you have a fully grounded conduit wiring setup, which is rare these days.  If you have 3 wires, then the fan has white and black and you connect those to white and black coming in.  The safety ground is bare copper and you connect the green wire from the shell to that.    If you have only 2 wires, the green wire is attached to the metal box which normally has a ground s***w or a place for one.

  3. Some applications in different areas require a ground to every fixture. If there is no green or bare wire in your ceiling box you can just remove it, or wrap it around the mounting s***w of the ceiling box.

  4. you can do nothing and it will never create a problem or you can s***w it to the ceiling box, or you can connect it to the bare copper wire in the ceiling if there is one. One thing for certain is that you will have to econmize with space when it comes to fitting the remote receiver up in the fan bracket.
