  1. This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name.

    Spradlin Name Meaning and History

    Variant of English Spratling.

    hope this helps.

  2. There is no such thing as a family crest.

A crest is part of a coat of arms. Coats of arms do not belong to surnames.

They were and are granted to individuals and are passed down through the direct male line of descent.  There might have been, for instance, 15 different men named Spradlin, not all necessarily related, each granted their own coat of arms, all different.

The peddlers that sell them on the internet, at shopping malls, at airports, in magazines, and solicit by mail won't have all 15.  They just want to sell you something.

The only time they will have more than one is if persons with the same surname from more than one national origin were granted one. In that case, they will have one of each when in fact there might have been 2 of each.

See the links below, one from the British College of Arms. They grant coats of arms and are the ultimate authority. The other from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U.S., The National Genealogical Society.

  4. Yes, Ancestry says Spradlin is a variation of Spratling.

There are a number of Spradlins in the Alabama in the 1930 census.

All of the information below is for Spratling:

English: nickname for an old or infirm man, from Middle English sprakeling ‘one with creaking legs’ (Old Norse sprakaleggr).

The place of origin for Spratling is England, most of them coming from Kent, with Somerset and Worcheshire being next. 6 families immigrated to the US in 1877 and 2 in 1891. Most were farmers in the U.S. 3 served in the Union Army and 3 in the Confederate.

In 1840 all the Spratlings lived in Georgia, in 1880 they also lived in Alabama with a few families in Tennessee, Utah and Oregon.
