Pardon my ignorance, has it anything to do with 'liver' and 'a pool'? Why is the city called that way?

  1. Liverpool, focus on words from different languages which relate to the water in the pool. One such theory is that it comes from the Welsh word Llyvrpwl which means ‘pool of confluence’, or a meeting or flowing of two or more streams. Other theories suggest that the name Liverpool is of Scandinavian origin. The Norwegian word ‘Liafra’ which means stream thick with water has been put forward as an explanation for the origin of the first half of the name. It has also been suggested as coming from ‘lithe’, a Danish word meaning an inlet around a marsh. The word ‘lifrig’ which means a tidal creek filled with water has also been put forward as an explanation.

  2. the things you learn eh - I grew up around there and always thought it was the myth of the Liver Birds LOL :o)

  3. Well when the city was being formed (before being named) there was a serisal killer wandering around.  He would rip out his victim's livers.  When they found him they realized he had been keeping all of these livers in his backyard pool.  therefore: liverpool

lol. ok seriously, I don't know. but I thought I'd try and give you SOME story.  try wikipedia.

  4. The History of Liverpool can be traced back to 1190 when the place was known as 'Liuerpul', possibly meaning a pool or creek with muddy water. Other origins of the name have been suggested, including 'elverpool', a reference to the large number of eels in the Mersey, but the definitive origin is open to debate and is probably lost to history.

  5. According to the Dictionary of British Place-Names:

"Liverpool   Lpool. Liuerpul c.1190. ‘Pool or creek with thick or muddy water’.
