  1. When people immigrate from other countries, they often change the spelling of their names, for various reasons.  That is probably what has happened here.  "Gertun" does not mean do, though it is close.  "Getun" means done.  I would guess that "gertun" is changed from German "Garten" with two dots over the "a" meaning garden.  The 2nd half is quite obscure.  It's possible that -kug- is changed from "Kuche" with 2 dots over the "u", referring to kitchen, cooking, or cuisine.  But what that has to do with gardens, I cannot imagine!  The "-ar" at the end probably is the same as our "-er" ending meaning someone who does something indicated by the earlier part of the word.  So, yes, it's probably from Germany.  On the other hand, the end of it also sounds a little like Turkish!

  2. Where did you find this name?

It is not in ancestry.com or familysearch.  No one by that name is listed in the phone book.

Are you sure it is spelled right and is a surname?

There are only a few Gertuns, but it is possible the name is misspelled or mistranscribed.

  3. The name looks vaguely like a Gurkha name I once knew.

No research done but I throw it in for you to consider

  4. I didn't find that spelling on any of my usual sites.

The first part in German, "Gertun" mean "do".

There are many emmigrants to the US with the name Gertun and they came from either Germany or russia.  It could be that when they landed in the states their names were shortened to Gertun

  5. Do a search on the web, everyone has a cousin that they haven't seen in years who has done some of the research already. in a search engine type in

    (your last name)+genealogy

    you can also try

    (your last name)+family

    Good Luck
