It's a joke name, like Sillius Soddus or Biggus Dickus.

Not really, there ARE Stifflers, in Ohio and Pennsylvania at least, possibly Amish, probably from a German root.

We had one chap, in our H.S. class, who, sadly, died prior to our 50th reunion.  A talented and warm man.
