Where does the "A" come from in "A片"?

Question

I was watching an episode of "Friends" with Chinese subtitles (because, you know) and Joey says, "Imagine a protective p**n bubble, if you will," and his subtitled line is: "就像有一倜A片保護罩".

I've put this through a dictionary of mine, so I know that 片 is a classifier for movies, but what does the "A" stand for? (爱? lol.)

It originates from the japanese p**n industry as in Adult Video Idol.

AV idol. hence taiwanese derives it from there, Adult film.

so its simply known as A片
