Where does the surname 'Skerten' originate from?

I have a few ancestors from Skerton in Lancashire (northern England). It's possible the surname derives from this town, or a town of the same name, but the spelling has changed over the years.

The Norwegian censuses of 1865, 1875 and 1900 don't know anyone named Skerten (or Skirten or Skerton or Skirton).

The 1881 British census contains several people named Skerten ( & Skirton & Skerton & Skirten).  They seem most common around Gloucester.

There are quite a few in England.
