  1. I have a few ancestors from Skerton in Lancashire (northern England). It's possible the surname derives from this town, or a town of the same name, but the spelling has changed over the years.

  2. The Norwegian censuses of 1865, 1875 and 1900 don't know anyone named Skerten (or Skirten or Skerton or Skirton).

The 1881 British census contains several people named Skerten ( & Skirton & Skerton & Skirten).  They seem most common around Gloucester.

  3. There is one family in the census in the US originally from Norway, and another family from England.

There are quite a few in England.

Could not find a meaning for the name.
