  1. The nearest I can find is Heilig, pronounced, I think, with a soft 'g', so that it sounds more like Heili. Names have often changed over the years, especially when moving from one country to another where the language is different.

    Heilig

    Last name origin & meaning:

German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): from Middle High German heilec, German heilig ‘holy’, a nickname for a pious person or someone with a trusting temperament.

  2. Me inclino por la respuesta de Geneviev! Suerte! :)

  3. There are 45 immigration records with that name. 37 of them were French, 3 were German, 2 were Scandinavian, 2 were Swiss, 1 was a Pacific Islander.

So there isn't one single source of the name. You can probably find your own family's origins in a few hours if you can find the names of your great-grandparents and where they lived. Then we can go backwards in census records and find your ancestor's stated origins.

  4. There is an area in Northern France called Heilly (Nr. Merricourt) so that is another possibility.

I had to go back to a marriage in the 1600's to find that I had some French ancestors.
