Where does the term KP come from in golf?

Of course KP commonly means "closest to the pin" when referring to an approach shot in golf - usually on a par 3. But where does the acronym KP come from? Just curious, anyone know?

    when you get closest to the pin on more shots than the others you are with you are known as KING PIN!
