Where does the term "paper view" come from?

When you buy a movie or event, its sometimes called a "paper view" movie? Where does this term come from? Why are these movies or events called paper view movies/events?

  3. It's not "paper view"--it's pay-per view.  It means you pay to view the movie once.

  5. The term is "pay per view," and in my experience it's used to refer to movies that can be rented over some kind of network to be viewed on one's own TV (or more likely the one in one's hotel room). When "pay per" is said fast, it sounds like "paper."
