  1. When submerged they are running from electric motors: There is no exhaust. When at or near the surface they run on Diesel engines, with the exception of nuclear powered vessels, which continue to use their electric motors. The snorkel one person mentions is for air intake, not exhaust.

  2. Nuclear powered submarines don't have exhaust systems.

Diesel powered submarines sometimes run a snorkel up to the surface from the conning tower, for submerged operation. But generally, to submerge to any depth, the operate from batteries, and have no exhaust while submerged, either.

    Update:

"... The snorkel one person mentions is for air intake, not exhaust." True on some boats, but Chinese diesel boats, at least, can still exhaust to the surface, too, using the old Irex type system, pictured in the first link below.

And Dutch boats have tested underwater diesel operation using liquid oxygen tanks as a source of "air" for underwater diesel operation to depths of 500 feet, in a system called Closed Cycle Diesel (CCD). The exhaust in these systems is cooled and vented out to sea.

  3. When the boat is submerged it runs on battery power and there is no exhaust, when running on the surface using diesel engines the exhaust goes out through a snorkel near the conning tower.

  4. This is for Diesel Powered Submarines

A Conventionally powered Diesel Submarine may be able to run its diesel engines while submerged at periscope depth, this is called snorkeling (snorting in the UK). A Snorkel Induction Mast is raised above the water surface. This brings air into theboat for the engines. The Exhaust of the Diesel Engine is directly fed out a Diesel Exhaust plenum. This is a pipe inside the Sail that has a upsidedown bowl like space over it reaching to a level below the top of the plenum. Before the Diesel starts, this bowl area is filled with air and the plenum is drained. Using the upside down glass in water principle, this will remain water free. Than the diesel is started sending its exhaust out the plenum and it bubbles under the bowl and off the ship. When the engines are secured, the Hull valves are closed, and the plenum and bubble area can reflood.
