Where does the umbilical cord go? i know i sound STUPID..?

when a woman has a baby, where does the umbilical cord go? i know, stupid question..and when i watch baby deliveries on discovery health channel, it looks as if some of the babies didn't have an umbilical cord?

The umbilical cord is attached to the placenta, after the baby is born they cut the cord, the placenta is delivered with the rest of the cord attached to it.

The cord runs from the placenta to the belly button.  It gets cut fast so in most of the shows on TV you can't even tell they had one.  The cord is still attached to the placenta and usually it is all burned as medical waste.
