Where does the water go if it enters the j-channel joining vinyl siding to a window?

What prevents it from getting behind the vinyl siding, particularly if the siding at the bottom corners of the window are not tight against the window?

The shape of the J channel, and the small tang cuts that you allow as an overlap. the water just runs out of the channel.

Hopefully its not that loose. water will take the easiest route.
