Does the wire that goes on the bolt on the back of alternator hook up to the battery on the positive side or can I splice it into the red wire on the plugin to the alternator

Alternator is from a 1982 GM chevy 3/4 ton van v8 305

  1. You should have three wires. Two of them connected to a white plug that plugs into the alternator. The other is the output to the battery. Do not splice it into the harness. If the end is broken off, get a replacement end from a local auto parts store. Cut the old end off, strip the wire bare about 1/4" and crimp on the new end. Reattach to the alternator bolt. Also, be sure to disconnect the black (-) negative battery cable before doing any work on the alternator. If you don't and you touch that lose cable to metal, you will do damage to the wiring and battery.

  2. The wire on the post goes to the battery, don't splice it! Did the post break or something? That happened to me once, and I rigged it. Just do not splice it onto the wiring harness!
