    The Yarra is not a grand river by world standards - just 245 kilometres from beginning to end - but it has always cradled and moulded the city.

    There is no source of the Yarra - or, rather, there are many sources. The river begins with little soaks in the crisp-aired wooded mountains of the Great Dividing Range, west of Warburton.

    Soaks become trickles, trickles become rivers, and the rivers become the Yarra and its major tributaries.

    The site of Melbourne was determined by a small natural rock barrier in the riverbed - near the Flinders Street end of present day Queen Street.

    The barrier held back the tide, and meant that this was the first place where fresh water could be guaranteed.
