Where does you middle name come from?

My middle name is my moms first name and my brother's middle name is my dad's first name. I always thought that was maybe like.. A little selfish of them, and its not really proper.. A middle name can be someone's name but not your own name! Plus my mom used to (when i was too young to fill out my own forms) list my first name as both my first and my middle just so i would get called by her name... And she expects me to give my children the same middle name as well (ie my mom's first name by my childrens middle name) or give my child her first name as thier first name (i really dont have a very good relationship with my mother)

Just wondering if anyone else had their parents first name as their middle name, or where your middle name came from? Relative.. friend.. or just simply a name your parents liked. I just found it a little strange and selfish of them..

  1. I'm named after my aunt  Janet Lee

    I'm Shelby Lee

And my aunt named her daughter after my mom Jane Ann

    her daughter is Tiffany Jane

  2. My name is Kara Michelle and yep I was a victim of let's name you something after your dad.  My moms name is Carolyn so that's where they got Kara and my dads middle name is michael so they picked the feminine version of michael and went with Michelle...that's how my name came about...but my mom first heard the name Kara off of a lady on wheel of fortune..whoo whoo!  LOL

  3. I don't think its being selfish in every case. My brother has the same first name as my dad due to family tradition.

my middle name came from a lady that my great-grandmother was friends with. not really sure why, but thats what they liked.

  4. My middle name is Kauleen (like Colleen). My Mom spelled it that way because my Dad's middle name is Karl, so there came about the K. And her first love's name was Paul, so then came the "-aul" part. To this day, my Dad doesn't know the last part of how the spelling came to be. But I love the name and how it is spelled! I doubt there are many people that spell it that way.

  5. My daughter's middle names are Danielle and Alexis. We chose Paige Danielle, because my husband liked the name Danielle and we both like Paige, so we decided to use Danielle as her middle name. We chose Mackenzie Alexis, because I like the name Alexandra, but that made for too long of a name. We both liked the name Alexis, so we decided to go with that. Our son is due in 10 days and his middle name will be Sean. We just loved the way Nicholas Sean and Thomas Sean sounded, we just have to pick one or the other!!

Using your name for your child's name is not selfish at all, I like it. I have the same middle name as my cousin, Lyn. I think it is just a way of showing that you are very proud of your child and you want to dedicate part of their name to a relative! Plus it makes for a great story to tell your child when they are older on how they got their name!

  6. My middle name is Leigh. My mom gave me my middle name after Viviene Leigh from Gone with the Wind. It is her favorite book and favorite movie.

  7. My middle name is my mom's middle name too.  My daughter's middle name is just a random name that we picked out that went with her significant first name.

  8. my middle name is Louise..my parents just liked it as its not after anyone..

    my name is Emma Louise

i dont think it is wrong to name your children after your parents or a relative..although i do feel it is your decision as the childs mother to choose a name that you like and not let what other people think effect what you want to call your child.

i plan on giving my daughter when she is born at the end of Oct my mothers first name (Sarah as her middle name) in memory of her.

  9. My name is Chrissy and my middle name is Bertha, after my grandmas middle name. Idk, its not selfish, every1 in my family loves my grandma

  10. My middle name is Jane--it was a name that was used by someone on both my mom's and dad's side of the family.  My dad's sister's first name is Jayne, and she's my godmother, and my mom's mom's middle name is Jane.  So giving me the middle name of Jane named me for someone on both sides of the family.

  11. My middle name is Christina. My mom wanted 4 boys and had 2 girls, also in 1985 the doctors couldn't really determine gender of the baby the way they can now. They thought I was going to be a boy and if I was my name was to be Christopher. Therefore, my middle name was Christina.

  12. its because of your relationship ... i named my daughter, her middle name is my mom's first name its a good thing to do but not to pressure someone to do it ...

  13. My middle name is Sinéad. It was meant to be Catríona, but my parents forgot when they where registering my birth...

  14. My middle name is Ann , it was given to me because that is my God Mothers name.  I'm very proud of that :) It's a way of passing her on with me as well since she's not blood related.

  15. My middle name is Hope

  17. my middle name is my grandmothers first name.

One of my boys has his fathers middle name as his middle name and my other son has a form of his grandfathers first name as his middle name.

If/when I have a girl her middle name will likely be my mothers middle name or maybe even her first name. My mother has two middle names, so I may just use one and then if I have two daughters the other would use  her other middle name.

  18. My middle name is my mom's name- and I think it's neither selfish or improper- I love it.

  19. my middle name is Raqueal after my great grandmothers first name

  20. My middle name came from my grandfather and dad's middle name (Lynn), one sister's middle name is from my great-great aunt, grandmother, aunt, and cousin's middle name (Allison), one sister's middle name came from my Mom's middle name (Renee), another sister's middle name came from my other grandmother's middle name (Jane), and my brother's middle name came from his father's first name (Martin). I like the little tradition we have and actually have a step-daughter with the same middle name as my first name.
