  1. Am I the only one who thinks cinder block IN water is a bad idea?

You can either use a free standing form pond, as already suggested, or you can do a Butyl lined pond in or outdoors (for indoors, be sure your wooden structure frame will take the weight of the total water, once filled.  You can use cinder block or solid wood platforms under the rubber, to provide stands for plants, or shelves for the turtles, just be sure any stucture will support the weight of water above/over it).  I prefer to have my turtles inside.

Another plus to a pond is having a bog (natural filter) do the water cleaning for you.

If you put your lil guys outdoors, be sure they are fenced/protected from other animals, and can't dig out and escape.

Whatever you decide, enjoy your turtles.

  2. How about a large rubbermaid tote? I bet they'd be happier than most pet turtles if they had as much land as they have water. You could build up one half of a tote with a few cinder blocks and then put some nicer looking flat rocks on top of them to make a cool land area. I suggest cinder blocks because it might only take a few to build up to the surface and the feeder fish and small turtles can swim through the square holes in the blocks, so you don't lose much water space in making your land area.

  3. Go to Walmart and get a couple of those big plastic tubs-they're pretty popular and very cheap (under $20 for the largest).  Just don't get the ones with legs...there are far too many reports of them cracking easily...that's a LOT of water that ends up on the floor.  You'll still need the sheilded heater and filters that are rated for 2-3x the capacity of the container.  You don't need to use any substrate and anything smaller than the turtles' heads can be swallowed and slowly kill them unless it's sand.  I've found that bare bottoms are the easiest anyway to keep clean.

  4. if you live in a warm climated area you could buy wire mesh and make an area outside for them. make sure they have a large place to hide under though. such as a log found in the woods and the ground underneath it dug up. and a fairly large area of water if youre willing to put in the effort if not the money

  5. I used a kiddy pond before I got a stand alone 150 gal pond form Sears for about 250.00
