Where exactly are the airports in Milan? Are they far from town? Is there alot to do/see there??

We're a couple in out late 50s looking for a sightseeing 2 night break in January.... Any recommendations of where to stay and what to do? Is Bergamo airport close enough? any info would help.....!!

Milan has 3 airports (well 2 + Bergamo)

Malpensa (MXP)- Principal airport and Alitalia hub, served by all the main European and International airlines. Direct train 'Malpensa Express' straight into city in about 40 mins.

Linante (LIN)- Closer to the city centre, smaller than Malpensa but still sees plenty of service from the likes of Alitalia, BA, Easyjet etc...Connected to the city by bus.

Bergamo (BGY)- Typical low-cost/Ryanair style airport, perhaps more difficult to get to via public transport.

If there's an opera up, definetly book a performance at La Scala.  Tickets can get pricey but the theatre is gorgeous and the performances are unlike anything you would find in the States, even New York.  Seeing the Last Supper is also worth it, as the only let about 15 people in at a time and you get the feeling that you're studying the work by yourself.  So much better than seeing something at the Louvre of Uffizzi.  If you have some extra time the church of Saint Ambrosia is worth a stop as well.  Finally, the Duomo is a must.  As of about six months ago the facade was under heavy restoration but the church is still spectacular.  The interior is an immense and beautifully decorated example of gothic architechture, and if you can make it, climb to the roof for an extra couple euro.  It's great seeing all the spires up close and the top affords unparalled views of the city.  While there you may as well stroll through the Galleria which is right next door.  All in all, Milan lacks much character as it is much closer to a city like London or NYC than Rome or Florence, but there's plenty to find if you know where to look.

Milan has 2 airports, Malpensa and Linate. to be honest, I really dislike Milan, it smells like a toilet and really has nothing going for it.  If you fancy a weekend break in Italy I can whole heartedly recommend Florence, the most romantic city on earth!  Or Verona is beautiful too.  good luck!

I lived just outside Milan for 2 1/2 years. If you want to see Milan you can do most of it in a day. If you like Opera book a ticket online for La Scala. Otehrwise I can recommend the Poldi Pezzuoli Museum, Santa Maria della Grazie to see the last supper by Michaelangelo, the Sforza Castle and  Il Duomo the Cathedral. If you like Fashion there is the fashion district near La Scala. The Naviglie or canals in the South of Milan is teh in-place to be seen at night. The quality of food is excleent wherever you go.

Milan is a big Industrial city. I prefer the smaller towns myself, I woudl definitely recommend visiting Bergamo Alta the high city. A stiff walk up or take the cable car.

If you want to go slightly further afield, I love Verona, so much history, the Roman amphiTheatre and the famous Romeo and Juliet balcony. This is accessible by train from Bergamo.

If the weather is nice go to Como and take a boat to Bellagio where Franz Liszt used to live and the beautiful Villa Carlotta.

Regarding bergamo yes its pretty convenient if you dont mind catching trains and busses. Unless you are a patient driver, the congestion on Milan's tangenziale at rush hour is something best avoided.

I agree with Francesca.  Milan is a stinky.  Graffiti, trash, smells...   Get on the train and go to Venice, Florence .....  I would not waste any time there.
