  1. i always fly to ciampino for a number of reasons, the most important one being the prices of flights. you can get a ryanair flight in january for next to nothing. we paid less than €120 for 4 of us. as well as that, ciampino is tiny and its easy to find your way, fiumicino is huge and its very busy, not the ideal start for a couple in their fifties on a relaxing break. when you land in ciampino, depending on where your hotel is, you can get a bus to the termini main station(access to both metro lines) or to anagnina which is at the end of the metro line A. this station is not as busy. get the public transport bus that is right in front of the main door. its a euro per person and a euro for a big bag to anagnina(about 30 minutes). i think its a fiver to termini on public transport, the terravision bus is dearer and goes to the very same place. the last time i went i stayed in the hotel porta maggiore(needahotel.com). it was ok for €80 a night for a double room, 3 stars, staff were nice, location was ideal. from anagnina go to metro station vittorio emanuele(about 20 minutes), when you come up to street level the tram stop is right in front of you, get number 14 or 5 for two stops(5 or 10 minutes) and it drops you right outside the front door. there is also a tram straight from hotel stop to vatican but i cant remember what number it was, look on the sign at tram stop. best thing to do is buy a BIG ticket thats valid for the full day for €4 when you get to anagnina and its good for all metro, bus and tram until midnight on day of validation. you can buy one for the following day too while your there so you can just get on tram first thing in the morning and validate it in the machine on board, instead of having to walk to metro to buy one. i would go for longer than 2 nights though, its not a lot of time, if your on a budget just dont eat near the touristy places and get drinks in the supermarket to bring around for the day. and be careful of pick pockets, they're really good there.

  2. I would suggest the following hotel:

    www.marcellaroyalhotel.com

    The staff is fantastic!!!!!

Try not to do Saturday and Sunday. The Vatican Musem is closed on Sunday.

  3. Ciampino is very very small 30 min from Rome

Fiumicino is quite big 15 min from Rome both airport in country side

    sight seen:

    FOUNTAIN TREVI @FONTANA DI TREVI

    SPANISH STEPS @PIAZZA DI SPAGNA

    COLOSSEUM @COLOSSEO

    NAVONA SQUARE@PIAZZA NAVONA

    shopping

VIA DEL CORSO E VIA NAZIONALE

ST PAUL AND PETER CATHEDRAL@ SAN PIETRO E PAOLO

    VATICAN MUSEUMS@MUSEI VATICANI

  4. they are very near... just google search for places to stay... easy as that

  5. everything you want... on this web site...

  6. Ciampino airport is actually closer to Rome than the main airport Leonardo Da Vinci. It cost around 25 euro for a taxi from Ciampino into the centre of Rome.

I would recommend the Suite Condotti hotel on Via Condotti a small 6 bedroomed hotel 2 mins from the Spansih steps. A very central location you can walk to all the main sites.

If not just use the metro and buses, but lookout for pickpockets especially on the metro ( its normally young girls and children who do this).

We found you see much more just walking , Rome is not that large a city if you stay in the area I suggested you are 5 mins walk from the Trevi fountain, 15 mins walk from the Colliseum in one direction and 15 mins walk from the Vatican in another direction. The Via Condotti area is surrounded by reasonably priced cafes, and restaurants.A very safe area.

  7. The Airports are two:

    1) Rome Fiumicino (also called Leonardo da Vinci).

This international airport is not far from he centre and better connected than Ciampino (trains every 30 minutes to Termini plus other trains to other stations). You just have to walk to reach the Trein Terminal

    2) Rome Ciampino. There are buses by Cotral called

"Autolinea Aeroporto di Ciampino"  some of them brings you to Termini station, some other to the underground stop of Anagnina.

From anagnina you can take the tube.

The only IMPORTANT raccomandation I would do is beware of pick-pockets. They are incredibly sneaky.

Do not bring your valuables with you,  leave them eventually at the hotel.

    Ciao!

  8. Campiano airport is about a 30 minute drive from the centre of Rome. There are taxis there and they charge (try to) about €50 for the trip back. there are buses too, which take you to the centre. We shared a cab with a couple keeping cost down. everyone seemed happy to do that in the taxi queue. We stayed at a hotel called Espana. which is about 10 minute walk from the Collaseum. Was really reasonable, very clean and offered nice breakfast. once you get to the Collaseum, things were generally walkable. The Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, etc etc. Above all just being in Rome was fantastic. Such history and beautiful buildings. We were there 2 nights too, not long enough, but also ample time to do lots if you need to. Word of warning, Vatican city will take you about 3 hours to queue up for. If you're not that bothered about getting in this time, would suggest just going to St Peters Basilica - very impressive, and if you are not Catholic, more than enough to be getting on with, minus entrance fees and queues!. Have a fabulous time - is marvellous city.
