I've heard that it comes from dead skin cells, but what about those old houses or shacks that have been abandoned for years?

  1. 85 % of dust in a normal household accounts for dead skin. In places without people it comes from light dirt, sand, and thread particles in the air.

  2. Dust can be anything from skin and hair to wood and insect parts.

In abandoned buildings, the dust is usually asbestos, chipping paint, fiber from curtains and furniture, mold, sheet rock, and metal.

  3. Dust comes from dust mites - they feed on skin cells and other organic matter.
