Where exactly does the brain go in an empty skeleton?

We always hear stories about bare skeletons being found, but where does the brain go if the person died? For the other body parts I can imagine that animals scavenged on it and then bacteria finished off the rest, but there's no easy way for animals to access the brain and even if bacteria decomposed it, there would still be something left it in the skull, instead of nothing?

  1. First it turns into a liquid, then it is either absorbed by the elements around it, or it dries and turns to dust.

  2. In most cases the brain liquifies and leaks out of the skull, maggots can also attack the brain and cause decomposition.
