Question:

Where/how can I change my disabled 10 yr old diaper in public? Too big for typical changing table.?

I have a 10 yr old daughter with CP in a wheelchair. When we are out and about in public there is no place to change her diaper. She is too big for the typical changing tables. And even though we have like a mat we could lay her on, there is usually no space on the floor big enough, without making it too "public" and embarrasing for her. Any solutions?

  1. A lot of stores now have family bathrooms, it is just one large bathroom. Our Wal-Mart has one at the back of the store. And I always go to that one so that both of my kids and I can go in together.

If not the pull up type diapers like GoodNites should fit her or you should already get that kind from the state, my sister does for her disabled daughter. You could try putting on two that way you can just rip the sides of it and slip it out and the other one would already be there. I don't know if it would work but it is just an idea.

  2. Don't they make the "pull-up" type of diapers for older kids/adults?  I don't know if this would be easier than having to lay her out.  Can you lift her from the sitting position enough to take off her pants, etc and put new ones on?  I don't mean to sound ignorant, I just don't know how disabled your daughter is.

  3. Have her stand in the bathroom stall while you wipe her or get a reclining wheelchair/scooter.

  4. use the handicape stall.

other people won't mind, they'll understand.

  5. Can she bear weight?  If so, in the handicapped stall disrobe her, and begin putting on a new goodnights, get her up, rip the old off on the sides and wipe.  If she can't bear weight then I would get her changed in the van assuming you have a conversion handicapped van.

  6. i geuss you should just use the handicapped stall anyways

  7. Use the handicap stall where there is enough room on the floor or lay her across your lap. It really shouldn't be embarrassing since they know she's in a wheelchair and if you make it quick, there won't be much time to notice. Hope this helps.

  8. change her in the car

  9. In a restroom stall

  10. handicapped stall... that kind of stuff is what thier made for

  11. Ive encountered a similar problem with my son who has physical problems as well....ive found it nessecary to basically use the car or the larger "family" bathroom where they are available..it isnt the easiest thing to handle and I share your concern but with a little skill and luck you can manage...

  12. Thats what Handicapped Stalls are for!

  13. Perhaps the handicapped stall of a restroom would be large enough to lay out her mat.  Our local WalMart has HUGE handicapped stalls.....I used to bring my daughter's big baby stroller in there with me when she was a baby.  That might be your best option.
