Question:

Where/how do I get good health insurance for my children?

I have two children ages 2 and 9 months and since I am transitioning from the military and do not want to pay their outrageous fees for what I believe is unsatisfactory care. My children are the most important thing in my life and I want them to have good health insurance in case anything happens. I also would like to avoid paying out the nose if that is even possible.

  1. I would like to recommend you some useful infomation here.http://health-insurance.expert-tip.info/...

  2. Tricare (which I believe is the most current military dependent insurance coverage) is great as long as you are active duty.  After that it costs an arm and a leg -- and I understand you thought it was unacceptable, but it has coverages that can be much, much better in some circumstances than regular health.

If you are working, you may find your employer offers group health insurance.  That is typically the most economic option that is available to you in the shortest period of time possible -- group health rates are cheaper when your employer foots some of the bill and your contribution either comes out of the paycheck directly and/or you have co-pays.

Public service employees can get decent insurance, as can employees of larger unions, professional organizations, etc.  The most expensive insurance (and unless you can afford it) is the kind you pay out of pocket without ANY kind of group rate or affiliation.

In the interim, while you are transitioning from military life to civilian life, see if your child's school offers any kind of temporary health insurance coverage or can recommend something.  Find out if your branch of service has organizations or groups that offer health insurance coverage at some discount for veterans.  Try to keep the current insurance coverage intact until you find other insurance -- insurance companies can bump your premiums up if you have gaps in coverage or (if it is more than 60 days since your last insurance coverage) you can find yourself with a six-month period of NO coverage for any pre-existing conditions after you've been accepted by other insurance.

If worse comes to worse, and you find yourself in an economic bind, most states have Medicaid coverage for children up to a certain age.  Contact your local department of Health or Human Services for more info.

  4. There are lots of health insurance companies, and they all make you pay out the nose. If your children are healthy and have no problems, for the next few years you may be better off putting money aside that you would normally pay in insurance premiums and using it to pay personally for any medical care for your children. Hopefully one of the democratic presidential candidates will keep the promise of affordable and universal health care if elected. So give some thought about how you vote in the coming election.

  5. The Blue Cross Blue Shield in your state will offer, "child-only," coverage. Prices will be on their website. Purchasing a high deductible to keep the monthly cost down, many services will be covered with a low co-pay without the high deductible needing to be met first. Office visits, immunizations, urgent care, and medication will all be covered with a co-pay most likely.

  6. Define "outrageous fees".  If you're expecting to pay $10 a month, it's not going to happen.  Depending on the plan deductibles and coverage, it could run $100 to $200 per month, per child.  That's REASONABLE.

If you are low income, you can check out your state children's health insurance plan, see if you can get coverage there - but the coverage varies from state to state - some states have pretty rotten coverage.

  7. Check this site out http://www.ez-insurancefinder.com gives you pretty good competitive quotes from available insurance providers in your area. Good Luck!

  9. You can often find a very affordable children's health plan if you are willing to accept a high deductible.

This way the monthly premiums are very low and you are still covered in case something major happens. Going without health insurance for your children (or yourself for that matter) as one poster previously stated might save you some money in the short term but if God forbid someone breaks a leg or develops cancer then unless you can afford to pay medical bills that run in the tens or even hundreds of thousands then it is always best to have health insurance.

You may also want to look into the Federally sponsored and State administered State Childrens' Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in your State. Any local health insurance agent that is worth their salt should be able to give you some direction. Here is some more information on SCHIP:
