  1. you cannot download Linux in .exe format. You need to get a .iso and burn it so CD/DVD depending on its size. You can then format the harddrive and use that CD/DVD to install Linux. To do this format the hard drive any way you know how and when you restart the computer insert the Linux CD/DVD and install.

  2. You are supposed to burn a "bootable" CD with that ISO. Nero can do that, but if you don't have Nero, get ImgBurn.

    http://www.imgburn.com/

That's the way to install Linux on a dedicated partition.

Wubi installer is in .exe format, but its supposed to be just a preview. It runs on top of windows,,, so performance will be poor, as compared to a standard install.

  3. Your question is NOT specific.  Linux is a whole different operating system, which uses the ELF not the exe format (usually.  It used to use the a.out format and is not wedded to any one executable format).  What you downloaded was an install disk for one of many distributions.  A few of them will allow you to install Linux from within Windows, but you haven't said if your chosen distribution will allow you to do so.

If it is Ubuntu, go to http://www.wubi-installer.org and follow the directions they give you.  Before you install it, MAKE SURE YOU DEFRAGMENT YOUR HARD DRIVE.  Why?  I learned to use Linux in college.  On a network the school had because it couldn't afford UNIX.  It was six years later I could afford a computer I could throw it on.  Meanwhile I used public computers and I used Macs as often as Windows machines.  It still took me a couple of years after that (until I got DSL in fact) before I could dump Windows off the machines I used on a daily basis.  Even with Ubuntu you are learning to administer your system and that is hard.  WUBI will not get rid of Vista. It runs on top of Vista, and as such is most useful as a learning tool.  I know you are angry with it, but Linux is a whole different, Unix-derived, OS.  Don't burn your bridges until you are confident that you can use it right now.

If you are using Opensuse, get Instlux at http://en.opensuse.org/Instlux which does exactly the same thing as WUBI.

If you want to be brave and use Debian, which is a very technical distribution, surf on over to http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com  .

An alternative is to burn your iso (disk image) to a CD using a CD burner and software like Nero, then set your computer to boot from the CD drive (it may be already: my new laptop certainly does so out of the box) and boot it up.  Most installation disks (not all) are live cds.  They let you use it without installing it.

I would definitely think twice before dumping windows for Linux, not because I don't think it's a good thing, but because it is complicated, it requires an understanding of some elements of computer science and you don't want to deal with the consequences of botching it.  And may not want to deal with the consequences of success.  Some people don't.

  4. You can't just execute a bootdisk.  Just burn the iso to a disk (doesn't matter what kind) and pop the disk in. Or you could just virtually "mount" it with daemon tools.

You can't find a version of linux or any sort of OS in .exe. Because it doesn't work like that.

  5. may be this would work.

    Try this...

    www.linux.com/download_linux/

    For UNIX(if you need)

    Try this...

    http://thepiratebay.org/search/LINUX/0/9...

  6. If you have never used Linux before then I highly advise against removing Vista from your PC.

You can install Ubuntu 8.04.1 using Wubi installer. You keep Windows as it is, Wubi http://wubi-installer.org/ only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

    LUg.

  7. ISO is the image file. So with Nero, Roxio or MagicISO you can burn the image into disk. Otherwise you can use MagicDisk to emulate the CD-DVD and run the ISO file from your computer, so you don't need to burn it into disk

  8. Go to this site.

    http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

You will be asked to select location and redirected to download.

    It's in *.iso format.

You can use Nero or similar to make bootable CD,

or use Winrar or Winzip to open it and get *.exe file.
