Where in Austin can I walk in the A/C and Park in the shade?

I'm trying to get my 87 year old father in law out of the house so we can get a bit of exersise and these are today's excuses.

I normally would take him to Barton Creek Mall, but now he is complaining that the car gets to hot, sitting in the parking lot.

Any suggestions?

  1. Have you considered Whole Foods Market? I realize that it is a market and not a trail or track, but is certainly big enough to walk about and offers covered/shaded parking in the garage below. Plus, after cruising the aisles, you could grab a gelatto, take a seat and people watch for a while.

    I hope this helps.

  2. Tell him to "butch up" and enjoy the walk. You could always make him wait outside while the car cools off. That'll shut him up.

I find saying, "Butch up, Dad" makes mine stop and think. In addition, phrases like "Grow a pair" and "Man up, Sally" work too.

EDIT: Hey Jeffy. He's my Dad's age. So what? Mine gets reminded that he's whining and butches up. Jeez, you Austinites need a sense of humor, too.

  3. Zilker Park, near the swimming pool has some shady parking places.  Or  a  parking ramp would work I would think.

  4. I don't think there is anywhere to avoid the car getting too hot!  Sorry!   maybe put some sun shades up in the car?  and I think barton creek mall is the only mall with some shade for the parking lot.  Good luck.
