  1. I'm partial to the province of Upper Austria and the region toward Salzburg - places like Linz, Wels, Steyr, and over to Hallstadt (you've GOT to see their "Beinhaus").

  2. i like the lungau best , visit: http://www.lungau.at/allgemein.cfm?DICEI...

there is also a german version: http://www.lungau.at/allgemein.cfm?DICEI...

during summer it is ideal for hiking and moutnainbiking, but there are much more activities.

if you would like to find more general information about some regions in austria try www.austria.info

you can find an interactive map with different categories depending on you interest: http://www.austria.info/xxl/_site/us/_ar...

hope this helped, if you have any further questions pleas ask,

    greets from austria,

    ines

  3. for a city break try Graz..Austria's 2ND largest city but with a very ancient centre......for  hiking in the undulating countryside then i suggest the wine street area and for alpine walking then tackle one of the various routes up the dachstein area.......all are in steirmark

  4. I've been to Salzburg many times, it's a lovely place. I've been to Vienna only once, and am hoping to go back there over the next couple of years.

  5. My favorite area is where Tyrol, Kaernten and Salzburg come together at the Grossglockner (the highest peak in Austria).  There is a marvelous road that goes over the top of the mountains there (the Grossglockner high alpine road), and you can see lots of beautiful countryside for miles in all directions, including crossing into Italy to see the sights just south of the border (easy day trips can be done from Austria).

One base I have used for this area is Krimml, a small town at the foot of the beautiful Krimml Falls.  Here is the hotel we stayed at:  http://www.krimmlerfaelle.at/de/default....  (You can click on the little British flag for an English version, but the German version seems to be more complete.  Make sure you click on "Krimmler Traum", which is the link to pictures of the Krimmler Falls National Park.)

I've included a couple of other links below.

I was born in Austria and frequently visit there.  My home town is much less spectacular than this area, but it is only half a day's drive away, so I always take visitors here.  It never diappoints.

  6. I love the city of Vienna. The beautiful architecture, pretty city parks, palaces, lots of cafes and restaurants, etc. There is just so much to see and do there.

But if I had to pick my favourite Austrian countryside it would be East Tyrol, near Lienz. The alps are just amazing there with picturesque villages and farms.

    Cheers,

    Petra, Vancouver

  7. Salzburg, Innsbruck and Wien (Vienna).. :)
