Where in Greece did the Ancient Greeks keep their vast knowledge?

Where did the ancient philosophers and scholars of Greece keep the vast wisdom of Ancient Greece, so that it could be preserved and shared to this day?

Did such a place exist?

A lot of that knowledge was stored in the Great Library of Alexandria.  Burning it down was the greatest crime against humanity.  Think of what was lost!
