We'd like to spend 7-14 days. She speaks no Spanish and has never traveled. I have made several trips to Latin America and my Spanish is very basic. We wouldn't mind volunteering somewhere. Looking for places that are inexpensive (I'm a starving student!) and safe.

  1. Costa Rica is beautiful and there are alot of things to see and do there. Travel agencies offer pkgs because it has become very touristic lately. Once you get there get involved with the locals..you will find some do speak english and they might tell you whre you can find some place to volunteer. Nature is very preety here and you can do the canopy ride!! it's amazing!

Also Ecuador , my friend recently was there and said the people were amazing and very thankful for help, she visited an orphanage and helped out and took candy to the kids, she said it was amazing. Good luck and hope it helped!

  2. Nicaragua is cheap and pretty much safe. You get a little less than 18 cordobas (national currency) for 1 dollar. i.e. you can buy about 4-5 medium sized gatorade bottles for 5 dollars. You can visit volcanic parks, natural preserves, zoos, beaches, and lakes for under 6,000 dollars(including airfare)

  3. well...bogota in colombia is a good choice. here you can find everything. we have the biggest mall in latinamerica, we have several amusement parks, we have the biggest choice in food (gourmet, organic, healthy etc) in the called "zona g" or "zona rosa" or "zona t", we have a great wheater...we have many things! you should come, and i could help you with the spanish, and show you how beautiful our city is.

  4. I think El Salvadoris a nice place, there is alot of people that speak english in El Salvador when i was there last time i went to a couple of restaurants and alot of the waiters speak english. You see alot of Americans here either way you will find someone that speaks English. El Salvador is very cheap it's a nice country, People there are very friendly usually go out of their way to help anyone specially tourists. Safety El Salvador is no more dangerous than the U.S just use regular precautions and you will be fine.
