  1. ONE DAY

  2. Otago University is in Dunedin. I didn't go to the uni or meet people from there but I really enjoyed Dunedin. It's the one city in New Zealand I'd consider moving to. (I spend 7 months there doing a working holiday, living in Auckland and Wellington, travelled most of the country.) Dunedin just had a great vibe to it and reminded me of San Francisco in a way. It gets very cold there and I think Otago has a coldest student house contest every year. I went to NZ after living in a very laid back alternative California town. I met a British expat living in Wanaka (also in the South Island) who seemed very laid back and cool and chose Wanaka because that's the kind of life he wanted. It's a small town with not too much to do but if you like the outdoors it can be wonderful. This expat said of all the cities in America, my laid back one was the one place of two that he would actually move to in America. So those are 2 recommendations. If you want more people and more chance at things to do: Dunedin. While living in Wellington, my kiwi flatmates had previously lived in Dunedin and also loved it. They were very alternative arty people. A lot of Americans I met before going to NZ really liked Nelson (another South Island town) but I had a string of back luck weather while visiting that town so I wasn't attracted to it.

  3. the top of the south island!! Motueka, Nelson and particularly Takaka. the weather is great at the top of the south so many people up their live "semi hippy" lifestyles, making a living from growing their own (organic) veggies and fruit even their own soap!

its an artists paradise where just about every store there is set up with local artists work (be it clothes, jewelry or paintings and photography).

check out the blurb about Takaka on this site
