Where in Rome Italy should we stay? For a Rome Vacation.?

We will be vactioning in Rome, Italy for one week the end of October. Which area of Rome should we find a hotel? We need to be convienant to all of the main attractions. Also, we would like to venture out to another city for a few days, any suggestions?

i live in rome and in the centre of the city there are many cheap hotel(but maybe they are full and you can't found a room!).....another city to visit is firenze because is near and beautiful.....venice in beautiful too but it's a bit far....try hotel near PORTA PIA they are good and near the centre!you can go to the collosseo, via nazionale,via del corso and piazza di spagna on foot (sorry for some mistake but i don't speak English very well)         :-)   :-)

Almost everything in Rome is centrally located and attrations are close to each other, most can be walked to from any hotel in the central city...the second time I went to Rome I stayed in Trastevere which is on the same side of the river as the Vatican -- the hotel in the link is walking disance  from the Forum and it is one block from the two trams that will take you right into the center.  Trastevere is more residential, but it is the oldest part of Rome and has a lot of good restaurants and nightlife too.

You could spend a month in ROme and not get bored -- for a one week stay I would focus on Rome and maybe take a day trip to Ostia Antica or Tivoli and Hadrians villa, these are less than an hour from Rome.

Personally I would recommend staying in an area such as Piazza Navona or Trastevere. If you stay somwehere central such as those two areas you will find it very easy to get around to all of the main attractions. You will not have a problem in those areas. I stayed last time with my wife in Piazza Navona with http://www.holiday-velvet.com and it worked out well.

In terms of other cities which are relatively close I would strongly recommend Florence. There is plenty to see and do in Florence!

Last September we stayed in Rome for 4 days at the Pantheon View B & B.  That was a perfect location for getting the sights in.  You are within walking distance of the Trevi fountain and right off the bus line for getting to the Vatican and the Colosseum.  Staying at the Pantheon was really nice because of all the small deli's and shops are right there.  The B & B was pretty affordable and an OK place to stay.  I found it online among many many other places.  

As to going to another city I'd recommend taking the train to Florence because of the ease of getting there.  It's pretty close and a beautiful place to see.  We rented a car and a GPS with autoeurope and stayed in Greve in Chianti.  Another wonderful location.  You could also book day trips through an excursion company to see the countryside.

Naples is another city easy to get to by train but we didn't stay there so I don't know much about it.  We left Naples and went to the Amalfi Coast which is breathtaking but a long way for only a couple of days.
