I want to work with horses, so I figured I would volunteer. Where can I do that? I am 15 but I am willing to do anything, but I do need training.

Can anyone help me with that?

  1. Look around and look on-line.

  2. Ask ur community that u live in

  3. go to a ranch

  4. At my house!  I need help and you can ride in exchange.

Seroiusly though...LOTS of barns need help.  I would also bet they would offer you free lessons in exchange for cleaning stalls, etc.

I did it for years....all through school.  I couldn't have afforded to take lessons otherwise.  I used to ride my bike to the barn after school.

Look in the phone book and find a school barn near you.  Show up about feeding time (in person not just call) and ask to speak to the owner.

You can tell alot more about someone in person than just talking to them on the phone.  People who call don't show up half of the time.

I guarantee you SOMEONE will be in that barn feeding the horses in the afternoon.

Good luck!  Be friendly...be yourself...and wear jeans and boots (NOT your Sunday best)...look like you could clean a stall.

  5. You can check if there are any therapeutic riding centers near you.

www.NARHA.org and look for "find a center"

Therapeutic riding is horseback riding lessons for people with disabilities.  Centers often need volunteers that are 14yo or older to assist with grooming and tacking horses as well as helping in lesson.  Volunteers take directions from a therapeutic riding instructor about how to help the rider learn new skills and become more independent.  Most programs do not allow volunteers to ride, but you do get a lot of hand-on with the horses.

Hippotherapy is medical treatment for people with disabilities incorporating horses and may also be offered at a therapeutic riding center.  Volunteers with hippotherapy are more like therapy aides and take direction from the therapist on leading the horse (if you are a horse handler) and how to hold the client.

Both types of programs rely heavily on volunteers.

  7. I live in Utah. I am sure if you ask around there is someone up there that knows. Do you have a High School Rodeo Team. Is there any stables around where you live. I am sure you can find a rancher up there that can help you go on ksl website and look under the horses I have seen a guy up there who needed his horses worked..

  8. I'm actually new to Utah and have also been looking for places to volunteer. At home I always volunteer at our event barn for the big horse trials but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of eventing here. I have found a couple of combined training events that are actually more in your area.

Also the Salt lake county equestrian park has tons of events that I'm sure there needing volunteers for and is a great way to get into the horse world. Thats how I got my first job working at that barn.

You could also look at volunteering at a large animal vet clinic and see if you can tag along with the vet to some of the farm calls or find a barn thats close to you and see if you can work in exchange for lessons. Good luck

  9. I volunteer at the SPCA as a barn assistant, and have a lot of fun out there. But you will have to have an adult with you because you are under 18.
