Question:

Where in a residential home would pipe caps be found?

I'm writing a script in which I'd like a character (who is knowledgeable about such things) to be able to locate pipe caps in the plumbing of an ordinary residential home. Is this something that pops up in normal plumbing (I know they are used in scaffolding and things like that)? If you needed a pipe cap, would you be able to -- maybe with a wrench and a crowbar -- tear some out of the interior of a house (assuming you don't care how much damage you'd do)? Thanks in advance ...

  1. If it were an older home with steel pipes then yes you would find them just about anywhere that you would have a faucet.  (if you are looking to do some damage then he could tear out the kitchen cabinets to get into the wall...or a bathroom vanity) They are used at the top of air chambers that prevent that loud clanging of pipes that you hear sometimes.  They would be 1/2 inch steel pipe caps and you would need a pipe wrench or larger channel locks to get it off.

Actually in newer homes with Copper pipes you would find them in the same place for the same purpose. But removal would be more difficult and reuse difficult as well.

Also would be found on traps for steel gas pipes.
