say my tometoes are infected with salmonella.

is it possible to wash them REALLY good? is salmonella on the peel?

how would salmonella get inside the tomato?

if i cook the tomato, like broil it, would it be safe to eat it?

If i freeze the tomato, would it be safe to eat it?

if i submerge the tomato in clored water, do i kill the salmonella?

  1. Wash it really good, with some anti-bacterial soap, under strongly running water, salmonella cells are pretty sticky, the water is the most important, and you want to wash all the soap off.  Cold is only Bacteriostatic, so the bacteria would still be there when it warmed up, ready to re-activate.  Cook it if in doubt.  It's on the surface, though, not inside.

  2. It lives on the skin.  Salmonella can be killed by chlorine solutions and disinfectants.  Cooking thouroughly can kill it.

  3. It's on the surface, ought to be able to be washed off (the same as we wash it off chicken), and cooking should kill much of it.  Freezing or submerging in chlorinated water wouldn't have much effect.
